By the end of this session you will understand:
- How to do an HIV test in 2012. Is pre test counselling falling out of fashion?
- What is the role of non-medical practitioners in the role out of HIV testing
- What settings and populations should HIV testing be routine?
- What are key clinical indicators that should prompt an HIV test where HIV testing is not routine
- Basic knowledge about the test technologies available and their pros and cons (sensitivities, turn around times, costs, window periods)
- What an HIV test result means (negative and positive) and what to do if you are asked to act on a result
